The Difference Between Finding a CV and Finding the Right Candidate

In recruitment finding a CV is rarely the difficult part, but finding the right person is.

When a recruiter searches for a candidate, a search in itself can produce dozens, or even hundreds of candidates who appear to match requirements on paper. They might have the right job title, the right technology and the right number of years experience. However, that doesn’t necessarily make them the right candidate for the role.

At Shape IT Recruitment, we believe specialist recruitment is about understanding the difference between technical alignment and genuine suitability.

A CV only tells you part of the story

A CV can tell you where someone has worked, which technologies they’ve used and the projects they’ve been involved in.

It doesn’t always tell you:

  • How deeply they’ve worked with a particular technology
  • Whether their experience is genuinely relevant to your project
  • How they operate within a team
  • How they communicate with customers and stakeholders
  • Whether they’ve worked in an environment similar to yours
  • What motivates them to move
  • Whether they’re actually interested in the opportunity
  • Whether their expectations align with the role

Two candidates can have almost identical CVs and be completely different hires. This is where specialist recruitment adds value.

Context matters

Take a Dynamics 365 CE role as an example. You might be looking for someone with D365 CE experience. On paper, a candidate with five years of CE experience could look like an obvious match.

But what have they actually done with it?

Have they worked primarily on CRM implementations? Have they worked with Contact Centre? Do they have Field Service experience? Have they been involved in solution design, configuration or user adoption? Have they worked with complex enterprise environments?

The technology may be the same, but the depth and relevance of the experience can be very different. Understanding that distinction requires more than searching for keywords.

The right candidate isn’t always the one with the longest CV

There’s often a temptation to look for the candidate with the most experience.

More years. More technologies. More certifications. More projects.

But more isn’t automatically better.

The right candidate is the person whose experience best matches what the business actually needs.

For one company, that might mean someone who has delivered large-scale transformation programmes. For another, it might be someone who can step into a project quickly and solve a specific technical challenge.

For a contract role, availability and the ability to become productive quickly might be just as important as an impressive career history.

Understanding those nuances before presenting candidates saves everyone time.

Recruitment should work both ways

Finding the right candidate isn’t just about assessing whether they’re suitable for the client. It’s also about establishing whether the opportunity is right for them.

A candidate might have all the required technical skills but have no interest in the industry, working environment, location, contract structure or type of project. Putting that person forward simply because their CV matches the job description doesn’t help anyone.

Good recruitment means understanding what the candidate wants as well as what the client needs.

It’s about asking better questions

The difference between sending a CV and introducing a candidate comes down to the quality of the work behind it.

Rather than simply asking, “Does this person have D365 CE experience?”, the questions should be more specific:

  • What have they actually delivered?
  • How relevant is that experience to this particular project?
  • What level of responsibility have they had?
  • What type of environment are they used to working in?
  • What are they looking for next?
  • Why would this opportunity make sense for them?

Those conversations create a much clearer picture than a keyword search ever can.

The result is a better recruitment process

For clients, it means spending less time reviewing irrelevant CVs and more time speaking to genuinely suitable candidates.

For candidates, it means being introduced to opportunities that actually align with their experience and career goals.

And for recruiters, it means becoming more than a supplier of CVs.

At Shape IT Recruitment, we specialise in technology recruitment because we understand that the right match is about more than what’s written on a page.

The goal isn’t to find someone who looks right.

It’s to find someone who is right for the role, the project and the business.
